On December 26, 2011 ... I had the opportunity to shoot at the Mission Inn "Festival of Lights" in Riverside, CA. Here are a few of the images I took of the lights, street photography and just stuff that caught my eye!

Even without a tripod, I was lucky to catch the moon!

All the children enjoyed the outdoor skating rink!

They even had horse drawn cartridges!

Day of the Dead 2011

A great event and a truly family celebration. Dia de los Muertos is an annual tradition throughout Latin America and is a large part of many US homes. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. On October 22, 2011, I was able to photograph several people to came to Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Many people dressed depicting their native heritage.

Each one is individual and special to the person.

Skulls dress up the various alters;
each one memorialize a loved one.

Families of all generations particpate in this celebration.

Red roses and marigolds are part of the celebration.

Some couples dress as brides and grooms.

And as in LA, some dress in "Old Hollywood" style.

Other people use old family scarfs and shirts to commemorate the day.

Detailed face make-up is a standard for this celebration.

Thousands of families gathered in LA to listen to
music and enjoy the day.
Children of all ages got into the celebration.

Hollywood glamor was clearly part of
several outfits of the day.

A few people went with a more Spanish flare,
while others felt the pirate in them come through.

Friends also enjoyed dressing up too!

Other people just placed skulls (or Catrinas)

around their alters.

Each person's face dressing is as individual as they are.

Even the youngest ones got into the celebration.

A war memorial alter was created by a family who's served in the military for several generations.

Dance is large part for several people.

And ... there is no shortage of photo opportunities throughout the grounds.

Everyone is creative in how they showed off their spirit!

Oceanside Harbor Days

Harbor Days is always a fun event in Oceanside. Lot's pirate running around, way too much food and many booths looking to separate you and your money. But through it all, it's a great place for street photography.

Here's a few images from today's adventure.

In San Diego, Sprinkles = Umbrella

Just 30 miles south of Oceanside is San Diego. On Labor Day 2011, I drove down to see the Tall Ships docked for the festival. But something more fun to shoot was all the people who immediately grabbed for their umbrellas after a few drops of rain. Look closer ... you can even count them if you wanted to.

Well ... it didn't even rain. Just sprinkled and all of a sudden people for running for shelter. I enjoy street shooting. It's getting a little additive in a "safe" way. At this point, no one has approached me to ask "why am I shooting them". I know someone will at some point. I'm still deciding what I will tell them when that happens?

I'm going to call this series of photos "Bad Weather". With each new rain or other natural event, I'm going to continue to photograph how people react.

Both mother and child grabbed the umbrella. I wonder if the girl would have wanted an umbrella or if her mother told her to use it. Most kids I know like to get wet. I did. I didn't have an umbrella. I just made sure my camera was dry, but me ... getting wet is still fun.

There were a few people who didn't care about the sprinkles. But since they are bicyclists, I'm just guessing they're used to riding in all kinds of weather.

Oh ... but what about the Tall Ships. I did see them, the Festival decided to make it harder to get close. At past events, you could walk along the side walk and you only paid a fee if you wanted to board the ship. This year ... they charged to walk along side the ships and to enter. So ... I found another location and was able to get a shot or two.

There is another Festival in Dana Point the weekend of 9/9 through 9/11. I may go up there. I'm still debating. Anyway ... I didn't go any any ships this past weekend, but I still had a great time.

For dog owners, their dog's a member of the family; so of course, they need to be part of the family portrait. You'll create your own individual and special picture of your dog.

You don’t need to be a photographer. Whether you use your camera phone, a point and shoot, or a SLR; you've learn on how to pose your pet, various “points of view” to take the picture, backgrounds, formal and informal positions, props, costumes and when/how to use treats. We'll review lighting, composition, the rule of thirds / and depth of field and F-stops. These are important basics of photography. We will cover when to use "the rules" and when to break them for better photographs.

The group is limited to ten participants, so you will get plenty of personal instruction. The workshop will be held in the North County (Oceanside) and your dogs are invited to attend.Only $84 Limit on only 10 students per class. Your dog must be well mannered and have all their vaccinations.

Pirate Freddy

Earlier in August, I had a great time hanging out with my Grand-Nephew Freddy. From swinging to rumping around the playground, he always gives me interesting poses and loves the camera. Gee ... I wonder where he get's that from???

What a great afternoon and an awesome little boy!!

College Portraits ... at Great shoot at Batiquitos Lagoon

When you love nature and want to get a unique photo shoot, there's nothing like the Batiquitos Lagoon
as a beautiful location. The Lagoon Foundation dedicated to the preservation, enhancement and protection of Batiquitos Lagoon, through programs that educate the public in the values of this natural environment and it animal/bird habitats.

Kayla is a college freshmen who wanted some portraits. We had an awesome time working together.

From close ups to full body portraits, Missy was a great person to photograph.

We both enjoyed moving from different areas around the look. There were many locations to shoot from on the main trail.

A tip to create more action ... just have your model flip their hair. You'll be surprised and amazed by what you receive. Remember ... take many photographs and make sure camera settings area set up for action.

2011 Photo Diary

I was working on yesterday's image, but my blog was not helping me. So ... this is about 12 hours late. I'm not including a photo for today's diary, but rather a book recommendation.

I've been an artist my entire life. I was drawing and painting before I could read or write. My life as a photographer began at the age of eight. I continue learn and study the arts. Note ... if you work with any professional (no matter what the industry), who never continues to learn their craft, then I say "danger Will Robinson, danger! We can become old and stale when learning ends.

Many people tell me that photography in the day of "digital" and immediate response is just "clicking" a button. But many aren't professional photographers or they haven't put the time into learning their craft. I've work hard to explain to people that photographers are artists. Photography requires time to not only to learn their craft, but create art. Photographs connect with people. They speak to the viewer. Almost anyone can learn the "techniques" of photography, but an artist sees her (or his) vision and uses a camera to share that with the world and the viewer.

The Art of Photography by Bruce Barnbaum expresses exactly what I believe and explains it so much better that I can. I'm enjoying reading every page. I'm very proud of my photographs. I wouldn't showcase them if I didn't. But in reading this book, it really has encourage me to expand my views and continue helping other people come to realize that photographers are artists.

I'm passionate about my photography and enjoy learning and expanding my art. and how it demonstrates the artist that is part of all my work.

I encourage anyone interested in photography to read this book. It's very enlightening and even if you aren't a photographer, you will get a new idea about the art that goes behind the lens.

Ready for your close-up?

Are you ready for your close-up? At this time of year, we take photographs at many occasions, such as family gatherings, parties or just spending time with friends.

Here's a few tips to help you look your best. First thing ... relax! The camera shouldn’t be something to be afraid of. Your face and eye tell your story. Think about someone or something that makes you truly happy. That will be an authentic smile to your face.

But people do ask me about how to place their body in a photo ... so here’s a few tips. Posing for the camera, you’re using “body language” to tell a story of the event. Pointed fingers, sagged shoulders or head held down aren’t showing your best side. Remember ... be confident, head held high and shoulders up and stand tall. I remembered my mother always saying “stand up straight” ... that’s a good though whenever you’re having a photo taken.

Hands: Girls ... your fingers should be long and elegant. Keep them loose and not held tight. You can place them on your hips or play with your hair. For the gents, hold you hands in a slightly fisted look, like you’re holding a small rock. Think about putting them slightly in your pockets, still showing your hands, but using your arms in an angle.

Arms: Elbows should be bent, but kept in a comfortable stance, very casualness. Just a tip, if your arms are straight forward, it can give a feeling of formality. Again ... be relaxed and think about a happy memory in your head, that will help you be more comfortable.

Feet: Feet hip width apart will give a look of strength and at different angles and/or heights. This will give you balance.

Head / Chin: Head tipped back slightly will give you the attitude look of “punk”, like “bring it on”. Head tipped back to the “high” shoulder will feel fun and flirty. Head down toward the “low” shoulder can express power or position (especially when shooting up at the subject). Also, if there is a little “extra” in the chin area, push your chin out. It will feel strange, but look great. Also, have the camera lens positioned a little higher that the subject, and that will also give you a more slimming look.

Legs: To look stronger and more confident, stand with your legs hip width apart. Make sure that one leg should hold the body weight; the other leg can be bent, crossed over at the ankles, or extended behind like a graceful dancer. Giving angles, such as bending at the knees with give you an artistic look.

Shoulders: Look at different “planes”, with one slightly higher or lower than the other.

Hips: This is one for the ladies ... hips titled forward will appear more slender.

Most important ... Have fun! Laugh, be silly and remember, you're celebrating the memories with family and friends.

Macro photography creates amazing images

Macro photography is getting close up to your subject, about 1/10 life size. That’s a plenty more technical terms, but I don’t worry about the math.

Being an photographer and an artist, my subject and the story I want to convey are the starting point for me.

I saw this caterpillar basically eating all my tomatoes, I decided not to get upset, but grab my camera. I then decided on my composition and lighting options. With macro, there are many other “techno” stuff and there are many sites* you can google that will give you all the techno terms, but it is your eye and your imagination that really creates the photograph. The close up on the rose, I was able to focus on the petals and where the rose starts to bloom.

With the butterfly, I was using his wings as an arch in the photograph, but I focused on his head/face. How often you see see the face of a butterfly?

Many people shoot with a point and shoot camera. Many have built-in macro settings. These will let you get in close and gives you a good introduction of macro. If you like macro shooting you may (in time) look to upgrade your camera to a Digital SLR and macro lens will give you some creative images.

The first thing to decide is your subject. There are many that provide incredible images. I use my macro to shoot bugs, flowers and leaves. Once you’ve decided on your subject, that lighting needs to be considered.

Personally, I shoot in natural light, using my Canon Rebel XTi 10.1 MP (2006 - there are newer rebels available) and a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Using natural lights does have limitations, including eliminating depth of field for large apertures. Many photographers use a flash or two flashes (mounted at opposing sides of the lens). It can become expensive to purchase the many flash attachments that are available. Unless you macro shoot a lot, or have the income to afford the expense, I’d recommend playing with natural light when you’re just beginning.

The next thing to consider is the distance your lens is from your subject. With a macro lens, you can (and need to) get up very close. This means, your lens is between one inch and one foot from your subject. For flowers, this is easy, but it is challenging for bugs. For example, caterpillars who move extremely slow, you can set up your tripod easily, but butterflies create more of a challenge. But with practice, you will love the images you can create.

Turn off the auto-focus. When your extremely close up to your subject, our camera’s computer may not adjust and it may not focus on your subject. I tend to focus and then move the camera closer to the subject. Any little movement will change the focus. I use a tripod for macro shooting. The Canon 100 Macro lens can be heavy to handhold and maintain focus.

When people think of succulents, the image on the left isn't what comes to mind. But I just focused on the tip of one leaf and kept everything else out of focus.

I usually focus my lens and then focus the image by moving the camera. This keeps framing constant. Small variations in your position become huge variations in image size, so fixing the focus and moving the camera keeps this stable. Other people prefer to hold their cameras. It really depends on your preference and that comes with experience in shooting. Try both ways, tripod vs. hand holding. The only way to decide is experimenting with your options.  

When I’m writing about Macro shooting or other types of photography, I’m sharing with you how I photograph my subjects and/or about what works for me. Photography, like any artistic process, is personal and subjective. The important thing to remember is that you like your photograph and enjoy shooting your end result. Hopefully, this will give you a basic overview about Macro and how you can create incredible images and art.

My main recommendation is to play and experiment. Keep shooting and you’ll keep learning. Have fun taking photographs and share your images with family and friends.

Veteran's Celebrate at Casa Romantica

I had heard about the wonder views and gardens of Casa Romantica in San Clemente. Built in 1927 by Ole Hanson (one of the founders of San Clemente), this 7-bedroom house is now on the list National Registry of Historic Places.

So today, I ventured up I-5 for a short 20 mile drive. There is a $5 admission fee, but it was worth it help preserve this part of California's history and to see the such an incredible gardens. Casa Romantica view of the Pacific is one of the most spectacular in Southern California and their garden is a Monarch Butterfly way station, with plants that encourage them to come. This image of the pier (above) was taken from the garden. The sounds of the waves can be heard from the above and there endless surfers are waiting for endless waves.

Because the weather has been warm, the Docents told me the Monarch Butterflies are still around till the weather gets cold. And with the Santa Anas we've been having we could have them around for a few more weeks.

I have lucky enough to photograph one today. Especially, since I didn't have my Macro lens or a tripod. This incredible creature enjoy the plant long enough for me to catch this shoot.

While I was there, a Veteran's Day Luncheon was held. From World War II to Afghanistan, there were several veterans in attendance and the crowd was very thankful.

The special part of today for me, was meeting an incredible couple, Donald and Jean Cotner. Don was a flight engineer on B-29 bomber, flying 33 bombing missions over Japan during World War II. While he was at war, Jean worked in a bomber plant in Tulsa, OK and received a medal home front women. Donald was away while his daughter was born and met her for the first time when she was 2 years old. To read more about Donald, check out his story on the Orange County Register.

With Veteran's Day Celebration going on, you would think that "war stories" were the topic of the day. But Donald and Jean enjoyed sharing stories of their first date 63 years ago. They married two years later and last July, they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Not only are Donald and Jean an inspiration, because their service to the Country, but they have made marriage a celebration ... and they are "beyond" one of the cutest couples I've met. This was one of my favorite, yet short 5-minute conversation.

Model Freddy in a "How to Photograph a Baby" Session

Photography babies can be fun, but you can a challenge to photograph. Here are few tips to help you and anyone who wants to photograph babies. At 7-months old, my Grand-Nephew, Freddy growing and changing every time I see him. He likes to smile and gives funny looks when eating his solid food.

My sister, Diane, wanted an updated photo of "Grandma, Grandpa and Freddy" for her wall. While at Francine's (my niece) house, we had a great time taking photos, playing and watching Freddy eat. I just love his little chair. Such a big boy, sitting up by himself. Images like this also make fun and interesting photographs. Don't just shoot babies in standard setting.

When you are photographing babies, look for fun and interesting view points to shoot from. Patience is key as well. If the baby gets tired, take a break. You'll be less stressed and so will he/she. In this case ... he.

You don't always need to have people starring at the camera. By coming in close to your subjects, you can add softness to your images. For "mother and baby", this highlights the love and affection they share.

Francine just picked Freddy up after nap and we were able to catch this image. You don't always have to pose people. Candid shoots are great to include in your picture album.

Uncle Wayne had a great time playing with Freddy. This is another example of photographing the moment. You can capture the funny looks that babies' show us. Wayne was just lifting him up and down, but the look is precious. Yes ... Wayne is not really in the photo, but in this image, the baby is the main subject. But if you look at Wayne, his arms and shoulder provide angles and interest in this image.

With digital cameras you don't need to worry about the number of images. Keep taking pictures ... you may take 200 pictures to have 20 outstanding ones. No one will ever need to see the 180 pictures that didn't come out, were blurred or too light/dark.

Times of day create inspiring images

Living by the beach, I'm always inspired to sunset at the coast. Especially when the weather is active. One thing to remember is the time of day you go out to shoot.

The lighting is best about 30 minutes before and after sunset. Now for me ... I'm not a morning person. My dog, Kharma doesn't believe that. Sorry ... side note.

I like to shoot at the end of the day and sunset. Now, if you are going to shoot after dark, a tripod is needed to keep the camera still.

This photo was taken just as the sun was setting. The tripod allowed me to view the setting from all angles. The light was soft and was reflected off the sand, creating a red and yellow glow.

Look at the sky during the day. Take notice of the clouds. These are clues for me to determine if I want to rush to the beach for that image. On warm days where there are lots of cumulus clouds are always of favorite of mine. They provide texture in the sky and the light reflects off and through them.

Harvest Moon

September 23, 2010 was the harvest moon. Simply, this means that this is time when the sun is closest to the equinox. The harvest moon comes soon before or soon after the autumnal equinox.

After checking on the time of the moonrise (6:40 pm), I headed to the Oceanside Harbor to photograph the moon rising over the ships in the harbor.

The lights and reflections added a lot of atmosphere to this shot. I love shooting a twilight, the light is so soft.

If you are looking to photograph family, friends or anything that captures your passion, remember to choose the right time of day. These photographs were planned out and you can achieve them too. Just a little though before you go out and you will be surprised by the images you get.

Woodies and dogs ... who knew

On Sept. 18, I had the opportunity to shoot more than 200 Classic Woodies. They were blue, red and green cars. Mostly from the 1940's - 1960's. Buicks and Fords were the most popular cars.

To get the angles of the cars, I used my wide angle lens, Tamron AF 11-18mm It allowed me to get close up and get the entire car in the shoot.

But I was also able to get "close-up" on some other aspects too. I don't use a wide-angle on a daily basis. I use it more for landscapes, but it was necessary to get the look I was going for.

What a ride!

One of the car owner was also a dog "person". He customized a radio flyer into a custom dog stroller. Now, I never like dogs being carried. I firmly believe they should walk ... they're dogs. But I had to say, this was one of the funniest dog accessories I've seen in "forever". I might let Kharma ride in one if I could ... just to take a photo. Well, at least I got a photo of their owner's dog, cruising at the beach!

Trash the Dress

July 10 ... Lovely ladies came to Oceanside beach and decided to run in the water. What's off about this? They were dressed in evening gowns. "Trash the Dress" was a huge success.

The models were told to wear dresses that they "don't care about". So they did. But they all looked lovely, even in wet gowns.

I was hoping for a sunny day (at least for the sunset), but the clouds had different ideas. Although, it was good for the "lack of shadows", it didn't allow for the fabulous twilight image.

Michele ... really getting into the task ... cold?

But ... all in all, everyone had a great time and I'm very happy with my images. If you're interested in doing your own 'trash the dress", just let me know!

First Time in Mommy's Arms

Francine and Jason got to hold Freddy for the first time yesterday. His blood pressure is getting better. Jason said that it was low, but being a "preemie" Freddy has a few challenges. But, he is getting stronger and stronger every hour. They felt much better after being able to hold him.

Freddy is still in the Prenatal Intensive Care Unit, so Francine and Jason can only visit him at certain visiting hours. Also, they don't know when he can go home. He must weigh a minimum of 4 lbs. We found things out as soon as the doctors let us know.

Francine was able to get out of bed and walked to the elevator ... and can eat whatever she wants!! And, she finally got a good nights sleep. The first on in 7 months.

That is about the scoop now ... More news as we find it out.

Are you ready Freddy?

"People of earth, your infant oppressor has arrived!" This was one of the first fun comments that my Nephew-in law Jason Toettcher said when he posted the birth of Frederick Howard Toettcher on Facebook. Born on March 10, 2010 at 6:18 pm. Freddy weighed in at 3 lb. 12 oz.

My niece, Francine and mommy of Freddy, called home around 3:00 pm to ask "what's happening"? to her mother, Diane. The answer "not much ... what's up with you"? Francine's response ... "my water broke". Within in an hour they headed to the hopspital and by 5:30, we were driving to St. Jude's Hospital in Fullerton.

Freddy was born 7 weeks premature. He scored "high" on the evaluation tests that Doctors gave him. In the coming weeks, they'll be more tests coming his way, but Freddy's a fighter and making his mark on the world.

Mom, dad, grandparents, uncles, aunts and the entire family ... and friends are happy and looking forward to spending time with Freddy and the entire Toettcher Clan!

Ostriches, camels and bulls ... oh my

What a way to spend Valentine's Day weekend ... watching Ostriches race around a track. I was supposed to see Camel races, but the people at the Date Festival only had ONE race. Why they call it "races" ... plural?? I don't know.

All in all, it was a great day and fun event. I went with several fellow photographers from the San Diego Sierra Club Photo Section.

Kharma in Watercolor!

Vampire Images ... sort of

I always felt comfortable taking photos of dogs (and other animals) and I still do. That is the focus of my business. But what I haven't felt easy at is taking photos of people. I'm excited about the images I see other photographers shoot. So ... to get used to shooting people and directing them, I joined a model / photography group to practice. The first event I went to a was a "vampire" shoot. It was enjoyable and I learned a lot by watching how the other photographers spoke to the models.

This gal was very nice and very expressive. The cape was great and really made the look.

This gal was sweet. Her mother told me she was just 15 and starting her modeling career. I asked her to twirl, but to stare at me when she turned around. I like the swinging cape.

This guy was over-the-top. He was great and seemed to enjoy showing his fangs off. He also did a good job in "acting" like a vampire.

Black and White ... A Photo Exhibit ... featuring me!!

I am very excited that several of my images, including this "Light House" will be showcased at Twin Oaks Gallery's Black and White ... a Photo Exhibit.

The opening will be held this Friday, Feb. 12 from 6-8:00 pm. This will be a great event. I've already heard from several people who are planning to attend my opening.
I will be posting all the photos after the opening is held. This a great time to support local North County Artists. You can purchase direct from me or from the gallery.

We're looking for a great opening ... Thanks to everyone who has called and emailed me.

Sold a Print and upcoming Gallery Show

What a weekend. I had a wonderful time with my oldest (Happy Birthday) and dearest friend and her sweetie pie (Tori & Carlos) hubby. We had a great time trying out a new restaurant, Breakwater Brewing Co. The location is great, just a few blocks from the beach, and the food ... wow. If I could marry "Garlic Bread" I would.

From viewing the ocean, we traveled south to view my photographs of dogs surfing on the ocean.

We ended the day playing pool (sorry, the image will be available soon). We didn't "really" win, but had lots of "practice" with certain shots. I wasn't happy on the next morning ... my legs hurt so much. Since I was doing "squats" to get my images, I could barely stand the next morning (and now too).

Except for the sore muscles, my weekend went well and ended up great. After taking sunset pictures today, I read my email and saw that an order was placed ... Yeah! Two weeks ago, I was taking photos on the Oceanside Pier and met a nice couple from Idaho. I gave them my card and today, the order was placed. Bird ... up close Tomorrow, I'll process it and get it ready to send out.

On Feb. 12 I'll be featured as one of the artists for Black and White, at Twin Oaks Gallery, from 6-8 pm. I'll have 6 images on display and for sale. Too see more of my images, go to search for Twin Oaks!

Sunset in January

I just finished walking Kharma and we are both enjoying a sunset. I am
often amazed at the images that tha iPhone produces.

The surf is taking over!

Southern California needs the rain, but does it need to come in one week? Oh well ... if you can't beat the storm, run and dance in the rain. That's about what I've been doing. Since Monday (1/18) we've had four storms in a row and people (and dogs) are getting "cabin" fever. I'm used to walking 45 minutes each day ... but I've barely gotten out. Each time the sky clears, I rush my Kharma outside for a walk, since he's off his doggy schedule.

This morning the rain stopped and I was able to get out for 2 hours ... Kharma and I walked for walked at the park and then went to the beach. It was incredible how much the storm affected the beach.

We were by Oceanside Pier and much of the sand has torn away from the beach. Several fire pits were taken by the surf. As you can see, more than 1/2 of the beach was taken. There will be a lot of cleanup after this storm. It was windy and went it started to rain again, we headed back to the car. Once in the car, I drove the strand and it was also taken over by nature. Very flooded and the same from the beach is also on the road too!

Now, we're back inside for a while. I'm working on my photos, job hunting and my website. I'm hoping the rain will stay away for a few hours ... to give me time to give Kharma a walk (after dinner).

I've been sick since 12/23 and it is not fun. I was in bed for New Years Eve. It's been a long since I stayed at home. There is a not too much on TV.

Anyway, I am now feeling better and back into the fray (I'm not sure if that is correct), and back to photo taking and marketing my new Pet Photography Workshops. I have more coming. The next one is Feb. 6 ... Registration can be found at http://www.ritaspiegel.com/workshops

In addition to dog photography, I have been taking images of surfers and the sunset. With all the rain, there is great shots. We are in the middle of four storms hitting Southern California. After a day of rain, the sun gave us a great sunset.

Through the Lens ... an Inspiring Book

Today, I spent selling my photographs at a Oceanside, CA farmer's market. It was slow and I didn't sell a lot, so as normal I started taking photos of random things around my table.

As I was looking at objects and seeing what might make a good image, I thought about National Geographic. I'm always inspired by the images in this book and as always, by the photographers who work for National Geographic. Even though I've ready this book several times, I'm happy to look at these images. I recommend it if you're an experience photographer or just beginning.

Back to today's story ... Since I needed to stay at my table, my dog was the main object of random shots. He enjoyed it and as always makes the perfect dog model.

Kharma sat in from of the cow, by JC Gallery, then went on to do "doga" (dog yoga) and fell fast asleep as soon as we got home. Life as my dog is hard.

Marketing and Workshops

Today was good. I had a meeting about marketing and my upcoming workshops. Lots of good ideas. I'm developing workshops that will help children learn how to take "candid" images of their dogs. The focus will be on families. I'm also going to market to adults too. This will be included in my business plans. So much to do on the business side. All new stuff and a lot work to do ... exciting and scary.

Business Plan ... A lot to update

Rain and rain ... Well, since it rained all day yesterday, I wasn't able to venture outside, so I worked a lot on updating my business plan. The older one was at least two years old. I helped my visually see what I need to work on and what items have been completed.

I didn't complete the updates yesterday, but I've been continuing the work today. When I complete the revisions, I'll be developing a marketing plan and finalizing the 2010 budget.

Wow .. there is a lot of paperwork involved in promoting a business.

Also ... I'm doing another eBlast for my the open house for the art show. That will be tonight too, as the event is Friday, Dec. 11. I used the boat image the last time, this time, I'll use the tulip.

Looking for work

Today was "Cyber" Monday". I spent the morning finalizing my ad and posting it to Facebook, Twitter and conducting an eBlast. In the eBlast, I used animals with holiday attire. The funniest one is the lizard. He made me laugh!!

Another one that is cool is the "Rudolph" dog. He was used in an Holiday Card a few years ago, and I was happy to be given credit.

Although money is tight, I am going to get a two holiday items for this year (for the animals to wear). I believe it will be an "omen" for upcoming business.

I'm hoping that something will come from it. That I will be earning a living. I am still getting unemployment but the first 6 months will be ending shortly. Every day I look for work in both photography and in non-profit management. I am hopeful and each time I promote my skills as a photographer or submit a resume, I am energized.

Well ... in continuing my efforts to get my website "out there", noticed and get people call me, I went to News 10's A-list. I filled out the application, and hopefully, my website and business will be chosen. I am hopeful and if anyone starts to ready this, I hope you will be send good wishes.

It is a beautiful day ... 76 degrees in SoCal.

I'll be taking photographs at the families Thanksgiving in La Habra and of Wendell (my niece's cat). In this old photograph, he was 6 weeks old. Now he is 6 months old and needs a current image taken.

Kharma and I went for a great walk at the beach, about 3 miles. This image was taken after he tore apart the stuffed reindeer. Now, he is very tired and that is good, since he'll be staying home today -- sleeping.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving today!!

Wow ... it is the day before Thanksgiving. I have everything ready to bring for tomorrow and even had time for an evening walk at the beach. No bad. It was about 70 degrees and little wind. Perfect for November in Oceanside, CA and a perfect day for photography.

Friday the 13th is a good for art!

"Exciting, fun and amazing" ... these were just of few of the words I heard at the Oceanside Art Gallery's Holiday Show. Friday the 13th was a good day for the event. From what I saw, there were at least 75-100 people in the room. I could barely walk at times. I am excited. Today at Gallery

It was very slow today. Even at the farmer's market, which is adjacent to the "art in the alley" location. Kharma, the art dog, did his best to sale, but no avail. I'm hoping to get better recognition at the Oceanside Art Gallery. Through the Fog (right) is one of my three of my photographs will be presented.

Venetian Mask Painting

I've always been an artist, and since August 2009, I re-discovered watercolors and the main reason I elevated my photography. I painted while in University and took photos to "paint from". I enjoyed photography more than painting (I still do), but today, I' am enjoying painting again. Today I worked on a Venetian Mask. I have the a lot done, but tomorrow I will work on adding details. At this moment, I am "so so" with it.

Kharma enjoyed attending the POPtobler at the October 14 opening event. Everyone at JC Gallery and Studio loves when Kharma drops by. He is the un-official, official Art Dog of Oceanside. He enjoys make camero appearances at all gallery openings and is quick to a happy tail wag for pieces he likes and quickly leaves to find the nearest tree (for a leg up) to note his critique. Look for of Kharma's appearances soon.

It has been a while

Well ... it has been over a month since I posted anything. I have been trying hard to find work. I've put my name and card out to many places. I've also have joined the Oceanside Museum of Art, Artist Alliance. I'm preparing to participate in an upcoming show.

I also did some job hunting in SF. It was great and I enjoyed photographing the City too!

Moving Forward

Wow ... I'm happy that the tasks for my show are all moving forward. I have the postcards almost completed and the notecards about 75% done. I do a few tasks every day.

The interesting thought that I have is if I'm focusing on the details of the show and the the marketing. The gallery did say that they will promote the show, but I haven't see anything in the paper??

I'm going to prepare an eNews and send it out to my mailing address and colleagues from my past positions. I'm playing to get all the tasks completed by Thursday!!

Postcards / Greeting Cards

Some times I don't know where to start ... so much goes through my head in preparing for the art show. I'm excited, happy and sometimes overwhelmed. It is amazing to see so many people who have successful business. I often think "how". Were they lucky or have a "I don't care" attitude??? Or how to they get "photography" jobs. I think I would be more comfortable starting at that point.

The photo (right) is the Oceanside Pier, taken just after sunset. I'm getting items ready for my show on Aug. 30. I went through all my existing greeting card and discovered that I needed to add more beach and oceanside photos. I updated them and had them printed. I'll work on the cards tomorrow. While I was reviewing in photos, I found the inventory of blank bookmarks. So ... I decided to add that to my show too.

So far ... here is my list:

Yes ... displays on the go

Hi ... I spent yesterday working on the displays for the show (Aug. 30). It felt great getting a few tasks accomplished. I'm going to look at my piece and do a "set up" at home to see how my images look on a table and the signs that are needed. I also need to see what images are needed. The ones I know I need to add are Oceanside images.

I also update my website too.

I'm trying to figure out journaling in this blog. I've never really keep a journal. I've done it a few times, but when I went back to read it, I didn't like what I wrote. I tended to "rant" on people when I was again, letting my emotions run "rampant" ... so, I was concerned they would find/read it getting insulted ... so I shredded it?

I think since this blog is online and is out there as soon as I post my thoughts, I believe that will help me maintain my focus ... learning to get a job as a photographer/artist.

Getting Ready

Today, I was getting ready for my show. I have been reviewing the photos and I need to add a few local (Oceanside, CA) images and separate them into categories. I'm going to look at displaying them in a artistic, but professional look. I felt very proud of myself for getting a few tasks completed.

I also contacted a local community college and inquired about teaching photography. I got the name of the person, but haven't called yet. I'm getting my ideas formatted (in my head) and then I'll contact them.

I'm happy with some activities, but I didn't as much as I would have liked to. Again ... I seemed to get side tracked so easily.

I do realize that this isn't yet ... getting me a job in the photography field, but I'm still happy about the work I did.

Help ... I think I am procrastinating??

Today I went to a health fair and home depot. I am going to make screen panels for my from doors ... much cheaper than purchasing them, especially since I don't have a lot of income coming in at this point. This a project I need to do, but again ... it takes me away from working on the business side/marketing for my images.

I enjoyed working on several photos and I'm about to update my site. I tend to think I procrastinate about the business component. It is so easy, fun and more enjoyable to work on my photography and art side, then thinking about the marketing side. I always have good intentions, but when I start, something takes my attention and turns it away.

Again ... I think this is a main problem I need to solve to get my business successful and yes, earn money. Wow ... I said it. I MUST earn money. I need someone who knows about marketing to help me, but I don't have the money to hire someone. Maybe some day.

Tomorrow is Sunday, which is always my art day. But ... I am going to prepare my "list" of things to do for next week. I have a lot of ideas for my art show, such as signs and getting all my existing photos organized.

Goal for next week: To do one item on my "to do" list. Wish me luck (or a kick in the ass)!

Art show

I got started. I went to a gallery and asked if how to participate in their monthly art show. It was just $10 to reserve a spot. So I did! On Aug. 30, I will be selling my photographs at Oceanside's Art in the Alley. I feel good about this, but I know it is one task. There is more to do. Wish me luck ... that I don't "freeze" in the process. - Rita

Starting Off

Well ... today is the day I'm starting my blog. I've been a photographer and an artist for as long as I remember. But, I'm never been a sales person. I've a bit shy about going into a store and asking the owner/manager to sell my photos, or to even my display fliers. I know I need to get over it ... I'm working on it.

I did add my blog to my website ... but I don't even know if anyone is ready it???
